Candace was born and raised near Palm Springs California; she is the youngest of 6 children of a very blended family. Candace enlisted in the Air Force as a special operations armament specialist and was then stationed with the rescue helicopters in Georgia where she met her husband. Shortly after her separation from the Air Force her, her husband and oldest daughter were stationed in England for four years. There she completed her undergraduate degree in law with Kaplan University and had three of her five children. She changed her direction from law to social work after her experience volunteering as a key spouse with the special tactics squadron that her husband was attached to. She recognized that an individual focus, as opposed to a legislative focus, could bring about a more impactful change in family’s lives.
Candace and her family were then relocated stateside where she was able to earn her Master of Social Work from the University of Southern California. Her major was in Mental Health with a minor in Military Life that required intensive research into Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and the effects it has on the individual and on the family. Candace completed her first internship at Addiction Treatment Strategies as a counselor for individual, group and family therapy sessions. Candace’s goal there was to improve the individual’s sobriety while also identifying and teaching how to manage the co-occurring condition in a healthy way. Candace completed her second internship with USCTelehealth as a practitioner working with the diverse population of Southern California with various disorders and treatment plans implemented.
Candace was completing her education while being a military wife, and stay at home mom of her five children for eight years prior to joining the Alpine Academy team in 2014. She understands the joys and challenges that children can bring and how important the relationship is to the parent and to the child. Candace loves working with the young women of Alpine Academy and their families to find each strength that can be built upon through their own efforts and with the resources that Candace and Alpine Academy has available. Candace has completed the training and the certification processes for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA) for equine therapy, Advanced Dialectal Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Problem Solving Therapy (PST), and additional trainings around treatments for eating disorders, and neurological development risks.
The age that these young women are at creates urgency in their life and Candace is respectful of this while appreciating the process that they must endure in order to solidify their changes for long term success. Candace is excited to nurture these young women to make the decisions to be healthier and happier now and in their own future.
