Joni Fotheringham, ACMHC

Therapist

  • EAGALA Trained
  • EMDR Trained

Prior to joining Alpine Academy, Joni worked at the House of Hope, a residential treatment center in Salt Lake City that treats adult women with substance abuse disorders. At the House of Hope she not only gained valuable experience in treating a variety of addictions, but also in co-occurring disorders of ADHD, anxiety, depression, trauma, and some personality disorders. She enjoys therapy group work and prides herself on creating an environment of learning and growth through safety, trust, acceptance, and empathy. One of her specialties as a therapist at the House of Hope was to facilitate a weekly grief and loss group.

She received her BS degree in psychology from Westminster College of Salt Lake City in 1992. Her husband died that year and she devoted the next 17 years to raising her two young sons, always with the goal of eventually pursuing a master’s degree and working in the field of mental health.   During that time she worked as an office manager in an investment office.

In 2002 a close family member was diagnosed with a severe mental illness and Joni sought support through NAMI by attending a 12-week Family to Family class. At the end of the class she was asked to train as a teacher for the class and happily accepted the challenge. She volunteered for several years teaching the class to other families of individuals with serious mental illness, providing education, support, and empathy.

In 2009 she began graduate studies in mental health counseling at the University of Phoenix in Murray, UT. She graduated with a Master’s degree in 2013. Attending graduate school later in life offered the advantages of life experience and clear focus. Working with women is her passion, and particularly empowering women of all ages to become the best possible versions of themselves. She utilizes Motivational Interviewing, DBT, and Solution Focused Therapy, primarily. She believes that errors in thinking and unhealthy communication skills create much of the distress in individuals. Joni is currently pursuing EMDR certification for more effective treatment of trauma and PTSD.

In her free time, Joni enjoys water therapy, spending time with family and friends, and ‘making pretty things’ through sewing, paper crafts, and crochet. Her sons are in their 20s, she has a delightful 2-year-old grandson, and three stepsons living in Tennessee and Virginia.
